Mandel Contradictory |
|
| |
Maryland Gov. Marvin Mandel repeatedly contradicted portions of his previous testimony today during an intense cross-examination by chief federal prosecutor Barnet D. Skolnik.Mandel changed an important date three times to conform with contradictory evidence cited by Skolnik and several times found himself disputing documentary evidence containing his own signature. At one point, Skolnik accused Mandel of lying on the witness stand about a loan he received from the Palottine Fathers...

The Israeli Offer . . . |
|
| |
An excess of caution, and of thinking along lines outmoded by the events of the past month, make it seem that a chintzy Israel offer threatens peace prospects with Egypt. In fact, Prime Minister Menahen Begin is bringing relatively generous terms to President Anwar Sadat. My strong, impression, after having seen both leaders recently, is that the Israeli proposals are more far-reaching than originally intended by Begin or expected by Sadat. While an accord is not certain, it will take a... |

AMONG THE ADVERTISED scenic attractions of Patrick County, Virginia, together with the Bob White Covered Bridge near Woolwine, the R. J. Reynolds homestead near Critz and the Philpott Reservoir, is a modest cinderblock building, in Stuart, on the banks of Poorhouse Creek. The building is owned by Glen and Leonard Wood, formerly of nearby Buffalo Ridge, and though their names aren't familiar in the drawing rooms of Georgetown, you can bet they're known in the White...

George Plimpton was late. On the way from the airport his car had gotten caught in the traffic around the shah's demonstration's and it took him more than an hour to get out to Silver Spring. At another time he might have been on his way to see the shah himself, might have been there in the White House instead of edging around it. He has always been in the middle of things by design - participatory journalism he calls it - and sometimes by coincidence. He boxed with...

Israel Makes Concession To 'Smoke Out the Arabs' |
|
| |
The Israeli Cabinet's unanimous approval of the joint U.S.-Israeli working paper on the reconvening of a Middle East peace conference represents a procedural concession in that Israel is now apparently willing to sit down with Palestinians at Geneva. This represents a bold move in terms of Israeli domestic politics and may yet get the government into trouble.Yet Israel has already set up so many preconditions as to who may be considered an acceptable Palestinian that the United...

Park Pictured as Only One of Many Korea Lobbyists |
|
| |
White public attention has been focused almost exclusively on South Korean businessman Tongsun Park in th federal investigations of foreign influence-buying in Congress, there have been indications all along that the South Korean effort was more than a one-man show.Investigators have been told that Korean diplomats as well as other "unofficial" agents were involved - indeed, that Park was viewed as a lobbying rival by the South Korean ambassador. Thus even if...

'Bergland Here' |

My father voted for Hoover in 1928. Then everything went down around his ears and he became a farm laborite. I grew out of that environment, and that's why I have a very suspicious streak in me.Bob Bergland AN OMEN: Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland has just finished telling the Millers' National Federation about grain price supports, and is hot-footing it for his limo parked outside the Capitol Hilton, when he is intercepted by a man in a...
